If you surround yourself with people who aren’t going to hold you accountable to your words, whoever you’re talking to will usually reply with a friendly nod and may even tell you that they’d like to be fit and healthy too.
But let’s be honest, being interested in something is not being the same as being committed to it.
If I had a pound for every time I’ve heard someone tell me they’d ‘like’ to be fit and healthy, I’d of retired a long, long time ago.
Talk is cheap, it’s easy and most of the time people won’t pull you up on it.
And that’s ok.
Just so you don’t think I’m coming from a morally superior perspective, let me give you an example from my own experience.
It’s not related to health and fitness, for the sake of making this point it really doesn’t need to be because although the topic is different, the principle is exactly the same.
There was a time at the start of lockdown when I had the bright idea where I thought it would be good to learn another language.
And my choice was Spanish.
So for a few weeks, every day I would spend half an hour to an hour trying to learn.
Numbers and some very basic phrases was where I began.
I enjoyed it, it was new, it was quite challenging.
A few weeks down the line, I missed a day.
Not to worry, I picked it up the day after and carried on.
A few days later I missed a couple of days.
It now became what I perceived to be a real effort and commitment to make the time to learn.
Now, I’m sure you can see where this is going and you are 100% correct.
I gave up.
Why? I still like the idea of learning Spanish but let’s be real…
I am not committed to doing so.
That may change at some point, but for now I’m not and I will be the first to admit that.
The truth is I was never really committed to the process, I didn’t really have a meaningful goal and the result was not surprising.
So today it’s 2.5 years later and guess what, I still don’t speak Spanish.
I’m not going to waste my time telling you I am going to do it because if I wanted to by now, I would.
And that’s a fact.
If my own experiences are relatable to you with your health and fitness that’s ok.
Be honest with yourself.
You are not committed, you’re only interested.
Commitment is different, it brings clarity, it brings purpose, it brings less questions and more answers.
You are in ‘the zone’.
Nothing will stop you, you don’t see problems, only acceptable inconveniences and solutions.
So before you embark on any new project, as yourself are you interested or committed?
Then set your goals and expectations accordingly.
Thanks for reading, have a great day.
